A Wheelchair that goes Off-road

Disabled people really have it tough. A wheelchair helps, but there are only so few places it can go to. Not anymore, though, as inventor Zack Nelson has come up with an off-road wheelchair. This invention is named “Not-a-Wheelchair”, and it may revolutionize transport, especially for the disabled.

The story behind “Not-a-Wheelchair” is touching. Zack Nelson’s now-wife Cambry is paralyzed, and unable to move without a wheelchair. She was limited, and in an attempt to overcome this, Nelson used two electric scooters with a seat in the center to make her a new one.

This new means of transport allowed her to go places she could never otherwise have gone. Cambry and Nelson have since gone on to improve this design Nelson came up with this in 2019. Now, they have plans to mass-produce it.

Describing the Off-road Not a Wheelchair

The “Not-a-Wheelchair” aims to provide an affordable adaptive off-roader to the masses. It is fully electric, and consequently quiet and non-polluting. The vehicle can be equipped with either one or two batteries. A single battery gives it a range of about 10 miles, while with two it can travel 25-35 miles.

It is made from parts off a bike, making repairs and maintenance easy. To enhance it’s off-road credibility, it comes with four-inch off-road bike tyres. It also has an aluminum frame to keep it light and a detachable bumper.

The off-road mobility device is 5 feet long without its bumper and 32 inches wide. This means it is not too wide to fit indoors and travel through doorways, though it is designed for the outdoors. It also has a rear rack, which can store, among others, another indoor use wheelchair.

Inventor Nelson remarked about what he calls The Rig, “The toughest challenge when developing ‘Not-A-Wheelchair’ is the price. We wanted to create something that is affordable for everyone. Finding quality components, and a simple enough design at the cheapest price possible took quite a bit of time. But I think we have something now that everyone will be able to enjoy, at a fraction of the cost of other ‘off-road wheelchairs’ currently on the market”.

Availability

The off-road wheelchair costs $3,750 in its single battery and suspension-less base variant. While not very cheap, it certainly is more affordable than other off-road vehicles. This could be a revolutionary mode of transport.
