Audi Introduces Digital Matrix Headlights

It is often that an automaker comes up with some new technology in their vehicles. There is a competition to bring the latest technology to customers. This increases the market of their products and more people buy them. Technology and automobiles are a very impressive pair of concepts.

The famous German automaker Audi is always a step ahead of its competitors. Audi has a profound history of making innovative and outstanding looking cars. Their elegant yet sporty designs and the technology in them make Audi a leader in the industry.

Audi is a German company which engineers, produces, and sells luxury vehicles. It came to life on July 16, 1909, in Zwickau, and its re-establishment was on September 3, 1949, in Ingolstadt, Germany. The brand was found by August Horch. Audi is now a part of the Volkswagen group.

The signature four-ring emblem of the Audi is indistinguishable from anywhere. You know a car is an Audi when it has four rings in the front. The four rings represent each of the four-car companies that together found Auto Union. Auto Union was then rebranded as Audi.

Even their slogan “Vorsprung Durch Technik” means “Being ahead through Technology”. The brand brings forward some most advanced uses of technology in their cars. They make them available to their most trusted customers. Aside from the technology, they just make some of the most beautiful designs in the industry.

The current CEO of Audi is Markus Duesmann.

With the launch of the latest 2021 e-Tron and e-Tron Sportback, Audi is introducing Digital Matrix LED Headlights to the cars. These headlights can project images or animations on to the road like a movie projector.

“The heart of the device is a small chip with around one million micro-mirrors, each of which has an edge length of only a few hundredths of a millimeter.” – Audi

The technology comes directly out of a movie projector. It is based on what is called a DMD (Digital Micromirror Device) technology. The device has a small chip having 1.3 million micro-mirrors. Each of these mirrors can tilt up to 5000 times per second, and these positions determine the image that is projected on the road. This way only the amount of light hits the road, and the rest is dimmed by an absorber.

The headlights can create a 50-metre long carpet of light in front of the car. This allows for safer night travel as it illuminates only the driver’s lane. This way the light won’t blind oncoming drivers in the opposite lane. The team uses intelligent curve lighting, highway lighting, and city lighting functions. This carpet of light also has arrows that show the position of the car in the lane. It also comes with parking animations and ‘welcome and exit‘ animations.

As of now, only the welcome and exit animations are available in the US because of safety regulations. Complete functionality is available only in Europe.

Lighting the Road to the Future

Intelligent and effective technologies such as this will give new meanings to safe and better driving. Most accidents happen at night because of poor lighting. Sometimes parked vehicles are also victims of such disasters. It is a cool feature but also has its impact on safety. Intelligent lighting solutions such as this will not blind the oncoming driver and will add to safety.

Audi’s run for incorporating jaw-dropping technology and ingenuity continues to amaze us.
