Global Warming-Not yet Eradicated
Over the last few years, improvisation and optimization of renewable energy sources such as solar panels, wind energy have scaled up to meet the demands of electricity generation. As a result, fossil fuels are being replaced.
Despite this, the release of CO2 into the atmosphere is still on a high.
The temperature of the earth is steeply increasing day by day.
The Arctic is melting, and islands are drowning.
What is the reason behind it?
The requirement of fossil fuels in electricity generation is just 25% of the worldwide demand.
Then who consumes these fossil fuels and for what purposes?
Industries like cement, mining, petrochemical industries need to produce and sustain very high temperatures. For instance, they require temperatures between 500°C-2000°C. Burning fossil fuels can only meet this, as they have a high calorific value.
This is one of the primary reasons industries are a major cause of air pollution. Fossil fuels release CO and CO2 into the atmosphere. However, there is no optimal way to recycle the emitted gases and reuse them.
So should we protest against Industries?
Perhaps that may be an absurd option. By doing so, we may cease the production of essentials are already in shortage. This opens the door for the necessity of technological development to meet the energy demands of industries by greener means.
When energy is coming from the sun, why are we digging the earth?
Bill Gross, CEO, and founder, Heliogen, has found a solution to this 75% problem. Bill and his team have developed a multi-acre magnifying glass known as HelioMax™. It can capture sunlight and concentrate it on a small area.
In principle, the solution offered by Heliogen is a simple technology. Using advanced computing technologies to provide precise control and automation, Bill has scaled up and optimized the performance of the HelioMax™.
“As Heliogen pursues our vision of decarbonizing industry across the world, our team has achieved a scientific and technical breakthrough”
The ‘Oil crisis’ or more popularly called the oil shock had provoked Bill to think about renewable sources of energy. As a result, throughout his life, he dreamt of relieving the energy requirements sustainably.
Being a serial entrepreneur, Bill instigated the longest-running technology incubator: Idealab. For the first time, Heliogen has provided a patented solution to this crisis.
“Innovation is seeing what everybody has seen and thinking what nobody has thought”
-Dr. Albert Szent Gyorgyi
HelioMax™ uses advanced computer-controlled software, which accurately directs an array of mirrors to focus sunlight on a single point. Its unparalleled precision fosters the production of temperatures up to 1500°C subsequently.
This is the first carbon-free technology that uses sunlight to produce such high temperatures.
How do industries benefit?
HelioHeat™ is the terminology given to the product which uses HelioMax™ (an array of mirrors) to foster high temperature for industrial processes.
This includes calcining, ore-roasting, catalytic reforming, sintering, etc. Hence, it promotes these industries to move towards a greener environment.
How do we benefit?
Researchers are asserting about the production of hydrogen as a clean fuel. This can replace conventional fuels soon. But one of the major drawbacks is the cost for the production of hydrogen by electrochemically splitting water. However, this is the most viable option.
Heliogen has stated that they can use not only this heat from HelioMax™ in the manufacturing sectors, but also they can also use this heat to Thermo-chemically breakdown water to produce hydrogen. They can use hydrogen as fuel. They trademark this technology as HelioFuel™.
Bill Gates has recognized the potential of this technology and has heavily invested in Heliogen. He aims at making their technology commercially available.
“I’m pleased to have been an early backer of Bill Gross’s novel solar concentration technology. Its capacity to achieve the high temperatures required for these processes is a promising development in the quest to one day replace fossil fuel.”, said Bill Gates.
This is a breakthrough technology that can decimate the carbon footprint and make this world a better place to live for future generations.
