THE ENDLESS

Regardless of the occasional rough patches and loose threads, this is a very enjoyable, fascinating film. It makes excellent use of a small budget and delivers on its unsettling story. This is a film that is easy to get pull into. Due to the variety of its techniques and the intention of its direction. A daunting atmosphere is there almost instantly with ominous scoring and dramatic transitions from scene to scene.

Tensions rise as the plot carefully creeps along. The cast is in room to hit notes as diverse as comedic and horrifying. However, while the craft of this movie may be clear, the drawbacks are clear as well. Some jokes fall flat, some characters feel incomplete, and some effects look weak. The Endless gives so many gifts but, unfortunately, it delivers some misses as well. Lightly peppered throughout the existential themes and sprawling imagery are cheesy lines and forced plot points. It leaves the whole thing feeling like a slightly missed opportunity.

If you have a good idea, a strong cast, a smart script, and directorial chops, you don’t need a lot of money to make a compelling movie. “The Endless” is proof.

THE ENDLESS

This is a movie that plays with our perceptions of time, space, and reality. It sketches the outlines of unimaginable terror while leaving the details to our imagination.  This story is fill with circles, and circles within circles. Or maybe we should call them “saucer shapes.” There’s an overcast sky with a hole punched through the clouds; round wind chimes clinking in the breeze; wooden benches arranged around a campfire. Circles are embedded into the score itself. “House of the Rising Sun” is around a series of circular chord patterns. The lyrics are about a gambler’s son who escape an abusive childhood determine to repeat his father’s sins by choice. Mirrors are as important, too.

In any case, in this age of big studio productions The Endless feels like a breath of fresh air. It is a masterful cinema with incomprehensible depth in it. You will feel, laugh and be force to share emotions with all the on screen personalities. Nowadays movies like this are in short supply. As you’ve guessed from this review I highly recommend you give it a watch!
